Understanding ADHD: More Than Just Being Distracted
By Cortney Warren, LPC-Associate
Supervised by Alelia Watson, LPC-S
When most people think of ADHD, they picture someone who is easily distracted, forgetful, or constantly on the go. While those can certainly be symptoms, ADHD is much more complex than simply having trouble paying attention.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects both children and adults and can impact nearly every area of life—including work, school, relationships, self-esteem, and emotional well-being. Many individuals with ADHD spend years feeling frustrated with themselves, wondering why seemingly simple tasks feel so difficult.
Common Signs of ADHD
ADHD can look different from person to person, but some common challenges include:
- Difficulty staying focused on tasks
- Forgetting appointments, deadlines, or daily responsibilities
- Procrastination and difficulty getting started
- Feeling overwhelmed by organization and planning
- Losing items frequently
- Restlessness or difficulty sitting still
- Interrupting others or speaking impulsively
- Emotional sensitivity and frustration
- Trouble managing time effectively
Many adults with ADHD were never diagnosed as children and may have spent years believing they were lazy, unmotivated, or incapable. The truth is that ADHD is not a character flaw—it is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain processes information and manages executive functioning skills.
The Emotional Impact of ADHD
One aspect of ADHD that often goes overlooked is its emotional impact.
Living with ADHD can lead to feelings of shame, self-criticism, anxiety, and depression. Repeated experiences of forgetting things, missing deadlines, or feeling “behind” can create a cycle of negative self-talk that affects confidence and self-worth.
Many people with ADHD also experience:
- Chronic stress
- Anxiety
- Relationship difficulties
- Emotional overwhelm
- Low self-esteem
- Burnout from constantly trying to “keep up”
How Counseling Can Help
While ADHD presents unique challenges, effective support and coping strategies can make a significant difference.
In counseling, we work together to:
- Develop practical organization and time-management skills
- Improve emotional regulation
- Reduce anxiety and overwhelm
- Build healthy routines and habits
- Strengthen self-esteem and self-compassion
- Learn strategies that work with your brain rather than against it
Therapy provides a supportive environment where you can better understand your ADHD and create personalized tools for success.
You Are Not Broken
One of the most important things I want my clients to know is that having ADHD does not mean something is wrong with you.
Many individuals with ADHD are creative, intelligent, resilient, and capable of incredible achievements. The goal is not to change who you are—it is to understand how your brain works and learn strategies that help you thrive.
If you are struggling with focus, organization, overwhelm, or suspect ADHD may be affecting your daily life, support is available.
You do not have to navigate these challenges alone.
